No one has asked, but I’m sure some are wondering: Wow, $130,000 is a huge goal. How’d they come up with that?
Believe me, I know that is a lot of money. It is daunting enough to me that it kept me from stepping out in faith to do this for too long.
I had all the doubts racing around in my head: How am I going to start a magazine by myself?? Greg (my husband) and I are definitely middle-class. I worked for a Catholic non-profit all my life but we were always OK with my smaller salary because Greg had us covered with good health insurance and a good pension plan through his Teamsters job. We have always been fine with a simple life. In recent years we were faced with some significant medical expenses not covered by insurance, and believe it or not, a pension fund that was now approaching bankruptcy as Greg nears retirement age. That’s all a bit TMI, but know that we can’t finance the launch ourselves.
More doubts: It will be very hard to sell advertising in the magazine at the beginning since there may be just a small readership. So while we believe advertising will be an income stream for Embodied at some point, we can’t count on it until we gain some traction and readership. How will I find major donors to help finance the launch of Embodied? Believe me, if I knew people who had deep pockets I would ask for their help because I believe in the potential of Embodied so much. But again, Greg and I do not run in those circles.
That leaves us with subscription income. The $130,000 goal equates to a little over 3,000 subscribers which will bring in enough income to cover the first year expenses. This would allow us time to get four issues produced and out there, gain some positive feedback and attention, and be the foundation we need to bring more subscribers in and move into bulk sales and distribution.
There are many people in the TOB ministry world who have encouraged me to pursue the launch of Embodied Magazine because they see it’s potential impact. They tell me: Don’t worry about the money. God has all the money in the world. As He has been preparing you to do this, He is preparing the hearts of those who will need to help you.
Through prayer and sacrifice I have overcome my worries and have stepped out in faith to get this thing rolling. Now I ask you: Is He calling you to help launch Embodied?
